13-Year-Old Gujarati Girl Became a Prostitute To Buy A Smartphone. Now She’s Pregnant.
Teenagers like to flaunt latest gadgets these days and the fondness for them led a minor girl to enter prostitution a year ago. Much to the shock of her mother and counsellor, a 13-year-old told them that she had taken to prostitution because of her aspiration to use high-end gadgets and mobile phones. The mother, who runs a grocery shop in Subhanpura, didn’t have any clue of her daughter’s act till the girl spilled the beans earlier this week. “The girl told her mother about her act when she thought that she had become pregnant. Her mother was shocked when she learnt that her daughter had turned to prostitution,” said a counsellor of 181 Abhayam service.
“She tried to explain the teenager that prostitution is illegal and immoral, but the girl refused to budge. It was then that the mother called us up to seek help,” she added. Originally from Anand, her parents had adopted her as an infant and shifted to Vadodara. The father of the teenager had died three years ago.
She had been working as a prostitute independently and booked her clients through a secret secondary phone. According to the counsellor, who attended to the teenager, she seemed unfazed and took quite some time to respond to the counselling. “A rift had developed in the mother-daughter relationship after the father’s death. The mother had to run a shop in the area to support the family. She admitted that she was unable to pay attention to her daughter lately,” the counsellor told TOI.
During the counselling session, the teenager said she was strapped for money and unable to buy electronic gadgets that her friends used. She used the vacant available house before her mother returned. “Her erratic behaviour had earlier forced her mother to send her to Anand. She lived with her maternal uncle briefly. She was sent back after she threatened to commit suicide if they kept her at Anand any longer,” the counsellor added.
Many high-end electronic gadgets and mobile phones were also found in her possession. “She was trying to justify her acts for long before we could make her understand that she was wrong. She came out as a defiant teenager who had fallen into bad company .According to her, a close-knit group of friends did know about her,” she added.
